Do swans understand the power of the 'One to One' Review?!

My 2023 end of year review completed 


I spent the morning completing my end of year review, just me, myself and a couple of swans. To be honest, it would have been nice if they’d shown a bit more interest in what I had to say….

And I’m not sure you want to hear about my year either, good that it was. Nor my New Year, New me, etc. 


But how about some thoughts on the power of one to one reviews?!


I was talking to someone recently who told me that their boss regularly postpones their 1to1 reviews, saying they have too much on and often postpones at short notice, with no rescheduling for weeks. 


The impact on this person? They feel less valued, not a priority and unfortunately, they manage this situation and themselves by not caring as much about their review or the business they work for!


Clearly, this is the power of the 1to1 gone wrong! 


So when it’s done right…


I found in my own teams, when my leaders were ‘on top’ of their 1 to 1 reviews, commercial results were consistently good and regular employee satisfaction surveys reflected that employees felt involved and valued. Feedback flowed both ways, creating energy and I have no doubt that the time invested in these reviews impacted positively on sales, customer satisfaction and business performance right through to the bottom line.


Research reinforces this and shows employee engagement and regular 1to1 meetings are connected. Employees who have regular 1to1s with their managers are 3x more likely to be engaged!


When an employee has the chance to ask their manager for information on how things are going, what opportunities this presents for them and how their work fits into the bigger picture, they’re much more invested in your business.


And finally, engagement is a known indicator of retention in addition to productivity.


In fact, as I reflect on the numerous benefits of 1to1 reviews, I’m already looking forward to my next one!
